Susan Filinda Beckstead 22 Sept 1868 15 Sept 1869 2 CONT Alexander Beckstead, son of Francis Beckstead, Sr., and Margaret Barkley, was born in Schohar 2 CONC ie County, New York, 16 Mar 1802. When he was about five years old his father and family move 2 CONC d to Williamsburg, Canada, where his father secured 200 acres of land, under a Land Grant. I 2 CONC t is assumed, therefore, that Alexander worked with his father on the farm until he was marri 2 CONC ed in 1823 to Catherine Lince/Lenss, at which time he farmed for himself. 2 CONT During the period 1837-38 three Mormon missionaries visited the homes of Alexander, his fathe 2 CONC r Francis, Sr., and others of the family. Most of them accepted the Gospel, sold their land 2 CONC , and made preparations to join the Saints then located in Missouri. They traveled by ox-tea 2 CONC m and wagons enduring many personal hardships, and finally reached DeWitt, Caldwell County, M 2 CONC issouri, the last week in September 1838. At that time the Saints were being persecuted sever 2 CONC ely by the mobs, and after a short time our families escaped to Far West, Missouri, where the 2 CONC y spent the winter. The next spring, 1839, they moved with the Saints to the area near Nauvoo 2 CONC , Illinois. Our families located wherever they 2 CONT could find suitable places to make a home - some were at Lima, some at Carthage, and some a 2 CONC t Warsaw, Illinois, all near Nauvoo. By this time Alexander's family consisted of 9 children. 2 CONT After the death of Francis, Sr., in 1841, the great responsibility of looking after his famil 2 CONC y, and the others of his father's family, rested upon the shoulders of Alexander. 2 CONT When the Saints were driven from Nauvoo in 1846, Alexander and the other families moved to th 2 CONC e area of Council Bluffs, Iowa. Almost immediately upon their arrival the United States Gover 2 CONC nment requested President Brigham Young to furnish 500 volunteers for the Mormon Battalion t 2 CONC o fight in the War against Mexico. Three of the Beckstead boys joined this group, thus reduci 2 CONC ng the help that was so much needed to look after the families. 2 CONT Alexander was not discouraged, however, and commenced preparation for movement of the familie 2 CONC s to the Great Salt Lake Valley. Just as they were moving, and had gone only a short distance 2 CONC , tragedy struck again; this time in the death of Francis Beckstead, Jr., a younger brother o 2 CONC f Alexander, which was a great shock and a tremendous loss to the families. However, Alexande 2 CONC r continued on, and most of them reached the Utah Valley in September 1849. For more detaile 2 CONC d information of the history of our ancestors read the Introduction history section. 2 CONT Alexander Beckstead settled in West Jordan, Utah, where there was practically nothing but sag 2 CONC ebrush. They all located on what was known as the River bottoms, of the Jordan River, which w 2 CONC as their only source of water. 2 CONT Alexander and his family were reported to be the first to get water on the land from the Rive 2 CONC r. They worked with pick and shovel, and mostly by hand, built the Beckstead Ditch, which per 2 CONC mitted them to take the water from the Jordan River for use as they needed it. They had to di 2 CONC g wells for drinking water, and at first most of their homes were adobe huts, and some were m 2 CONC erely holes dug into the bank along the river bottoms. Then as rapidly as possible better hom 2 CONC es were built, a Church meeting place was provided, and they had a place for school children 2 CONC , very meager of course. 2 CONT Later Alexander erected the first Blacksmith shop in that area. This shop, built before 1853 2 CONC , was west and south of the Old Rock Meeting house, in West Jordan. The building was made o 2 CONC f slabs and rough lumber with a roof of slabs. It did not contain a bench to sit on. The me 2 CONC n who came to visit or were waiting for their work to be finished, just stood around. 2 CONT In 1861 to 1863 Alexander Beckstead assisted materially in sending outfits back to the Missou 2 CONC ri River to help the Saints in I the movement West. During the hard times when flour cost $25 2 CONC .00 a sack, Alexander, instead of selling his flour, divided it among the poor. It is reporte 2 CONC d that on one occasion he sent his son John Alma Beckstead with 5000 pounds of flour to the p 2 CONC oor people in the St. George, Utah, area - without cost to them. 2 CONT Alexander was a veteran Elder in the LDS Church during his 2 CONT entire life, and a friend to everyone in need. He passed away at his home in West Jordan, 2 2 CONC 5 Feb 1870, and was buried in the South Jordan Cemetery. 1 CHAN 2 DATE 14 Apr 2003 3 TIME 01:00:00 1 OBJE 2 FORM jpg 2 FILE C:\PAF Data\Family History Pictures\Alexander Beckstead & wife 1, Catherine Lince.jpg 2 TITL Alexander Beckstead & wife 1, Catherine Lince 2 NOTE 2 _SCBK Y 2 _PRIM Y 2 _TYPE PHOTO 2 _SSHOW Y 0 @I16@ INDI 1 NAME Catherine /Lince/ 2 SURN Lince 2 GIVN Catherine 1 SEX F 1 BIRT 2 DATE 6 Jul 1807 2 PLAC Williamsburg, Dundas, Ontario Or Schoh, Ny 1 DEAT 2 DATE 12 Nov 1889 2 PLAC South Jordan, Salt Lake, Ut 1 BURI 2 DATE Nov 1889 2 PLAC South Jordan, Salt Lake, Ut 1 REFN 77 1 _UID 70FD67E6E720754EBD73E26B3C4C6E443B0B 1 FAMS @F18@ 1 CHAN 2 DATE 16 Feb 2001 3 TIME 00:00:00 0 @I17@ INDI 1 NAME Henry /Beckstead/ (102-4) 2 SURN Beckstead 2 GIVN Henry 2 NSFX (102-4) 1 SEX M 1 BIRT 2 DATE 4 Dec 1827 2 PLAC Morrisburg, Ontario (or Williamsburg, Dundas), Canada 1 DEAT 2 DATE 3 Sep 1888 2 PLAC West Jordan, Salt Lake, Ut 1 BURI 2 DATE 6 Sep 1888 2 PLAC South Jordan, Salt Lake, Utah 1 REFN 38 1 _UID 7D8C2B3CA4237244ABFCE6937892ECA9AC09 1 FAMS @F10@ 1 FAMC @F18@ 1 NOTE Listed as No. 102-4 in the John Beckstead book. 2 CONT 2 CONT Henry Beckstead, 102-4, 2 CONT From pages 67-69 of John Beckstead book 2 CONT 2 CONT Henry Beckstead, son of Alexander Beckstead and Catherine Lince, was born 4 Dec 1827 (at Mati 2 CONC lda), Williamsburg, Ontario, Canada. He was the 3rd of 15 children in this family. His earl 2 CONC y life was spent helping his father and mother with duties about the home and farm, and he re 2 CONC ceived a fine training from his parents. 2 CONT The Gospel message was taken to the home of his parents, and grandparents, in Canada, and acc 2 CONC epted by them. And, in the following year, 1838, the families, being among the very first on 2 CONC es to leave that area, left Canada to join the Saints. They traveled with ox teams and final 2 CONC ly arrived at DeWitt, Missouri, the last of September 1838--only to find the mobs molesting t 2 CONC he Saints day and night. It was impossible for them to settle in a home, and they continued l 2 CONC iving in their wagons, until they finally escaped the mobs, and journeyed in the Winter Quart 2 CONC ers area for the rest of the winter. In the spring of 1839, they again moved with the Saint 2 CONC s to the area of Nauvoo, Illinois where they again underwent the persecution of the mobs. Th 2 CONC e family again found it necessary to move, when the Saints were forced to flee with their liv 2 CONC es, and few possessions from Nauvoo, and they located temporarily in the area of Council Bluf 2 CONC fs, Iowa. 2 CONT Henry married (1) Lucene Bird Bybee, 6 June 1848, at North Pigeon, Iowa, and to them were bor 2 CONC n five children. Following their marriage they started for the Salt Lake Valley in a covere 2 CONC d wagon drawn by four oxen, as members of the Redden Allred Company. Lucene drove the ox team 2 CONC , because her husband, Henry, was assigned to be one of the hunters to provide wild game an 2 CONC d fresh meat for the members of the wagon train. They arrived in Utah in 1849. 2 CONT While crossing the plains enroute to the Rocky Mountains, a vast herd of stampeding buffalo c 2 CONC aused the oxen on the Beckstead wagon to bolt and run away, throwing Lucene out of the wagon 2 CONC , into the prairie and inflicting a deep long flesh wound in her cheek, which upon healing le 2 CONC ft a long prominent scar, as evidence of the hazards encountered by the Mormon pioneers durin 2 CONC g their migration to Utah. 2 CONT Henry Beckstead was a Nauvoo veteran and a Utah pioneer of 1849, who dug ditches, built forts 2 CONC , defended the place and safety of his neighbors and always gave of his time and talent for t 2 CONC he up building of any community in which he lived. Henry was one of those sturdy souls the me 2 CONC mory of whom posterity delights to keep alive. 2 CONT Henry first settled in Uintah valley (Utah) in 1850, along with others who were attempting t 2 CONC o locate and build a home. He laid out plans, dug ditches, put in headgates and took out th 2 CONC e first water for irrigation purposes from the Weber River. Some of the other families settli 2 CONC ng there were John M. Bybee, Joseph Hardy, Joseph Kingsbury, Daniel Smith, John L. Smith an 2 CONC d John W. Winward. About this time they built a fort that was 500 feet north and south and 13 2 CONC 20 feet east and west many were attracted to this fertile valley, and soon it became over pop 2 CONC ulated, and with too little land and water, the people gradually drifted away to other neighb 2 CONC oring communities. 2 CONT In 1854 Henry Beckstead moved to Ogden, where he became Sheriff of Weber County. In 1856 he h 2 CONC elped the belated handcart companies into the Territory, after they had become stranded on th 2 CONC eir way, and most were nearly starved. 2 CONT History records the movement of Federal Troops, known as Johnson's Army, into the Utah Territ 2 CONC ory in 1857, and the 'move south' of the families of the Saints. Henry moved his family sout 2 CONC h to Provo, where he left them, and returned to Salt Lake City. He was a member of the militi 2 CONC a, and went with Lot Smith and a chosen group of men entrusted with the task of delaying, o 2 CONC r destroying the army's supply trains. Henry and the cavalrymen captured and burned 51 wagon 2 CONC s in three separate trains along the Green River without firing a shot. Because of this the A 2 CONC rmy was seriously crippled and forced to go into camp for the winter thus allowing time for n 2 CONC egotiations and correction of the misunderstandings that had prompted the invasion of the Ter 2 CONC ritory. Five years later this same Lot Smith headed a cavalry troop of the U. S. Army in th 2 CONC e Civil War. 2 CONT In 1861 Henry moved his family to South Jordan, Utah. Here again he was a 'Minute Man,’ and s 2 CONC erved as a Captain of the cavalry in the Black Hawk Indian War in southern Utah. 2 CONT Henry always took an active part in ecclesiastical duties, and was a counselor to Bishop Will 2 CONC iam A Bills for 20 years in the South Jordan Ward. As a progressive agriculturist he brough 2 CONC t into the Territory one of the first modern threshing machines, and had an active part in th 2 CONC e development, through helping to establish irrigation companies and otherwise, of the West s 2 CONC ide of Salt Lake Valley. 2 CONT He married (2) Emily Grace Williams; (3) Emma Marsden; (4) Elizabeth Wood, and (5) Mary Hanna 2 CONC h Williams. 2 CONT He lived a rich life with many experiences of early Church history. One of the most revered m 2 CONC emories was in living near Nauvoo, seeing the Prophet Joseph Smith, and hearing him speak, an 2 CONC d his sad recollection of seeing the bodies of the Prophet and his brother Hyrum Smith bein 2 CONC g returned to their home, after their martyrdom in Carthage jail. 2 CONT Henry was loved and respected by his many friends, and his name will always stand out as on 2 CONC e of the true pioneers of the West. He passed away 3 Sept 1888, and is buried in South Jorda 2 CONC n Cemetery. 1 CHAN 2 DATE 3 Apr 2003 3 TIME 00:00:00 1 OBJE 2 FORM jpg 2 FILE C:\PAF Data\Family History Pictures\Henry Beckstead & wife
